Before hiring Bruce Walker, we had planned to interview – with trepidation – a number of Realtors. Our first experience with Realtors fifteen years earlier when we bought our home had been miserable and we considered them a necessary evil. We thought that was the way it had to be – a dodgy business all around.

The housing market was already sliding when we decided to list our home in the Hollywood Hills. Our neighbors’ houses had been sitting for months, giant empty albatrosses, unable to move and costing their owners plenty. Yet, we could not wait for the real estate market to correct itself; our son was expected a prep school on the east coast in just two short months. We fully expected to take a bath on our house and be unhappy throughout the experience.

We’ve never been so wrong on all counts.

Bruce entered our life for the initial interview and was very low key. The interview segued into an initial input session, and an hour and a half later, he finally departed with our listing. We never even got to Realtor number 2, let alone numbers 3 and beyond. There was just something about Bruce we liked.

Sometimes when I think of Bruce, I think of that giant nursemaid dog in the Disney version of Peter Pan. He nudged us to do the right thing and meet his expectations for excellence because he knew that’s what it would take to sell our house in this down marketplace. He had us make little changes in our home’s presentation; little changes that would have big payoffs. He knew how to motivate us to get things done in such an easygoing manner that we barely knew we were being “handled.”

The upshot – we sold our home in less than a week for $26,000 over asking. On the first day it showed to a caravan of realtors, we received two offers. I blame this entirely on Bruce, as the house was priced right, immaculately presented with top-of-the-line collateral materials and support.

Even though our home was the biggest item my husband and I had ever owned, and we had every right to be nervous, Bruce kept our two-month relationship lighthearted and straightforward. When I started freaking out over the small stuff, Bruce reeled me in with his calm voice of experience. He’s been in the business a long time and can really see the big picture.

The bad news is that, because the house sold so quickly, Bruce Walker was but a blip in our lives. He was so professional, but he was also so much fun. We miss him a lot. You will, too!
